Cat Haven

Mobile app for facilitating the adoption of cats in the Greater Toronto Area

The current state of Toronto cat adoption has primarily required Torontonians to go to various animal shelters in the city, each with its specific policies and processes. However, this existing solution fails to address that would-be-cat-adopters are looking for the right-fit cat and not necessarily a specific animal shelter. I believe there could be an easier to to facilitate adoptions.

How can we streamline the cat adoption process to increase adoption rates, engagement, and accessibility?

Outcome

A consolidated one-stop platform for adopting the perfect cat in Toronto that meets the needs of would-be-cat adopters.

Ideation

I begin all my projects with pencil and paper. A habit that has stuck with me since my first year of studying design. It's meant to be an imperfect and messy process to work out the ideas brewing in my mind during ideation.

Design System

The goal of the Cat Haven design system was to introduce a consistent visual and interactive foundation that would support the app's functionality while addressing accessibility and usability challenges. Leveraging Figma, I designed a comprehensive system that encompassed branding identity, typography, color palettes, and modular components.

The system was based on Material Design principles for Android, ensuring familiarity and intuitive interactions for users. The design system streamlined the development process, improved visual cohesion, and laid the groundwork for future scalability, including smartwatch integration.

Interactive Components

Modular components like buttons, text fields, and floating action buttons (FABs) were designed to be reusable and responsive across devices.

Smartwatch Integration

The project also included iOS smartwatch integration, allowing users to access key features like adoption tracking and notifications directly from their devices. Gesture-based interactions were designed to enhance usability and create an intuitive, accessible experience across platforms, ensuring consistency and scalability through the design system.

Outcome

The Cat Haven design system transformed the app’s digital presence, creating a cohesive and accessible user experience. Key results included:

Consistency: Unified UI components enhanced usability and reduced design inconsistencies across the platform.
Accessibility: A fully accessible color palette and typography improved inclusivity for all users.
Efficiency: Modular components accelerated prototyping and streamlined development, supporting rapid iterations and scalability.

The design system became the backbone of the Cat Haven platform, enabling seamless navigation and personalization for would-be-cat adopters while setting a standard for future growth.
